Godwin Lawson Foundation awarded funding to empower girls

Safe haven 453x302

We are delighted to announce that the Godwin Lawson Foundation have been awarded funding from the People’s Postcode Lottery for their new project working with young women.

Following the death of her son to knife crime, Yvonne Lawson established the Godwin Lawson Foundation to support young people to become productive members of society. Focusing on leisure activities, they foster team spirit and raise awareness of social issues.

Lawson notes that when the foundation was established, they focused almost exclusively on boys but after becoming aware of the ways that girls can become involved in gang activity they knew it was time for a change.

The Empowering Girls project aims to enable young women to become Peace Ambassadors; building their teamwork, anger management and communications skills. As ambassadors, they are able to return to their community and inspire positive change, becoming peer mentors for other young people.

Over the course of the project, they will work with young people in Enfield, Haringey and Waltham Forest.
